On the occasion of the 558th anniversary of the passing of the National Hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, a Commemorative Symposium was held today in Kruja, organized in cooperation between the Municipality of Kruja and the National Agency of Diaspora.

The symposium focused on Skanderbeg’s figure as a symbol of Albanian resistance, a pillar of national identity, and an architect of Albania’s early connections with the European world, encouraging reflection on the historical and contemporary values of his legacy.

The event was opened with remarks by Ms. Yllka Kukalaj, Deputy Mayor of Kruja, and Ms. Ermonela Xhafa, Executive Director of the National Agency of Diaspora. Also in attendance were representatives of central institutions, including Ms. Klodiana Spahiu, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Albania, and Ms. Milva Ekonomi, Member of Parliament, who both emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting historical heritage as a core element of national identity and as a vital link with the Albanian diaspora.

During the proceedings, speakers explored the multidimensional figure of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg within the Albanian and European historical context, with particular focus on his role in the history of resistance and in shaping Albania’s early relations with Europe.

Kruja, as the center of Kastrioti resistance and heritage, was presented by Ms. Besa Sheta, historian, while Ms. Aina Hoti, representative of the Albanian diaspora in Switzerland, shared insights on the role of Albanian associations abroad in promoting Skanderbeg’s legacy and strengthening national identity.

A special address was delivered by Ms. Geri Ballo, Director of Made in Arbëria, expert on Arbëresh relations and representative of the diaspora, who highlighted the importance of preserving the historical, cultural, and spiritual ties with the Arbëresh communities as an essential part of Albania’s heritage and national identity.

In conclusion, Mr. Mehdi Hafizi, Director of the National Museum “Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg”, offered a reflection on historical and cultural legacy and the responsibility to transmit it across generations.

The event was further enriched by the screening of selected scenes from the documentary “Donika Kastrioti – A European Princess”, adding an artistic and cultural dimension to the symposium.
